Vatican Geometry

The Challenge
How do you translate the physical majesty of Roman vaulted vaults and marble columns into a responsive, fluid web interface that maintains its spatial dignity across screens?
The Concept & Philosophy
We developed a modular grid system based on the classical golden ratio, mimicking structural stone bay layouts. By setting up staggered reveal panels, we created an architectural pathway for the user's focus.
The Sanctity of Space
In this project, we sought to strip away the clutter of typical web design. By introducing sacred geometry and classical proportions, the digital interface gains a sense of monumental stability.
Core Architectural Decisions
- Aged Plaster Staging: We used warm plaster gradients to define interactive panels, ensuring that background changes represent transitions between chambers.
- Arch Contour Reveal: We developed a persistent Roman arch overlay that scales down as the user scrolls, leading them from the grand entrance into detailed portfolio galleries.
The Process
Starting with raw sketches of Roman arches, we structured HTML layout elements to represent nested arches. We then integrated scroll-driven scaling to create a zoom effect, simulating walking beneath massive stone portals.
The Final Result
An award-winning editorial site that loads instantaneously, utilizing CSS grid staging and optimized SVG masks, leading to a 45% increase in visitor session duration.
